About Scientist in the Classroom:

The Scientist in the Classroom Partnership (SCP) Program is a partnership between Vanderbilt University and Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools focused on enhancing the teaching and learning of STEM in elementary and middle school classrooms.

All participants in the program are graduate students and postdoctoral fellows from Vanderbilt University, Tennessee State University, Meharry Medical College, and Middle Tennessee State University who work with teachers to design and implement inquiry-based learning laboratories in the classrooms one day per week during the academic year. The teachers and fellows work together in the summer months to forge a strong partnership and plan the inquiry-based lessons for the entire year.

The teacher-fellow teams then work together in the classroom to co-teach the lessons planned during the summer. The program draws several graduate students and postdoctoral fellows each year who are interested in teaching in the K-12 system.

Earn Field Placement Hours

Fellowship Program

The partnership between Scientist in the Classroom and TeacherReady offers SCP fellows the opportunity to earn teaching certification while participating in the SCP program. The Scientist in the Classroom program acts as the fellows’ field placement for TeacherReady, and allows students the opportunity to gain experience in teaching while learning the theory behind effective teaching.
