hr employee aimeeSchool District HR Employee Seeks to Become a Teacher. We recently caught up with TeacherReady teacher candidate, Aimee Kirkpatrick, a clerk in the human resources department in an Alabama school district. Aimee is setting the stage to earn a professional teaching license and apply to one of the graduate school programs partnering to serve TeacherReady alumni. Because Aimee’s story is one we often here from our second-career applicants including school district non-instructional employees and paraprofessionals, we asked Aimee if we could share her story with you and she agreed; here it is:

I have been going over some of the master program information as I get time, and I am really thinking about pursuing [the master’s degree]. I currently work in human resources for our school district, and have decided to go into teaching. Through the Teacher Ready program I have realized I can do both. I am able to manage my time with working, school work, and observing. We are not allowed to obtain overtime, but instead get comp time so I have been using this plus vacation to observe. I have enjoyed it so much! I have also learned a lot in the program, and I am very thankful for everything that I have learned. I cannot wait to continue my lessons and learning.

We hear similar stories like Aimee’s from our teacher candidates who are working in school districts across many states. Assisting non-instructional school district employees earn a professional teaching certificate is a win-win-win: School districts get to enjoy the benefits of second-career teachers like Aimee. Future students get the opportunity to learn from experienced professionals. And Aimee and our teacher candidates win because they are able to enter a field that they are passionate about. Aimee confirms, sharing, “I have enjoyed [my TeacherReady field experiences] so much! … I look forward to finishing this program, hopefully attending grad school, and furthering my career.”
