The Scientist in the Classroom Partnership (SCP) Program is a partnership between Vanderbilt University and Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools focused on enhancing the teaching and learning of STEM in elementary and middle school classrooms. All participants in the program are graduate students and postdoctoral fellows from Vanderbilt University, Tennessee State University, Meharry Medical College, and Middle Tennessee State University who work with teachers to design and implement inquiry-based learning laboratories in the classrooms one day per week during the academic year. The teachers and fellows work together in the summer months to forge a strong partnership and plan the inquiry-based lessons for the entire year. The teacher-fellow teams then work together in the classroom to co-teach the lessons planned during the summer. The program draws several graduate students and postdoctoral fellows each year who are interested in teaching in the K-12 system. The partnership between the SCP and TeacherReady programs offers the SCP fellows the opportunity to earn certification while participating in the SCP program. The SCP program acts as the fellows’ field placements, and allows them the opportunity to gain experience in teaching while learning the theory behind effective teaching.
